Shaded periods are Nectar conversion bonuses — the only times Avios got cheaper. Two windows in a year.
Three things the data shows
Avios were cheap on 56 days out of 36615% of the year. Top up outside those windows and you pay 16% more — and there’s no way to know unless you’re watching.
Buying Avios direct from BA was never the cheapest routeNot on a single day. Even during the 40% flash sale in July it reached 1.26p, against Nectar’s 0.80p.
The difference is worth £65 on a 50,000 Avios top-up£400 at the standard rate, £335 during a bonus.

We’re deciding what to build next. Pick whichever you’d actually use — it decides what we make.
How we work this out. The Index is the lowest repeatable cost, in pence, at which an ordinary UK
consumer can acquire one Avios today. 400 Nectar points convert to 250 Avios, and 400 Nectar points redeem for
£2.00 — so an Avios costs 0.80p at the standard rate. Bonuses lower it. We publish the full method, our
sources and every correction, because a number you can’t check is worth nothing.
